How Safety Scores Are Calculated

Every number is sourced directly from official government databases.

STEP 01

Official Data Only

Crime statistics come directly from the FBI Crime Data Explorer API and city police department open data portals — never estimated or crowdsourced.

STEP 02

Per-Capita Normalization

Crime counts are expressed as rates per 100,000 residents using Census population data, making it accurate to compare cities of different sizes.

STEP 03

Transparent Scoring

Safety scores (0–100) weight violent crime at 70% and property crime at 30%, normalized against the 2024 FBI national average. Formula is fully documented.
